Grand Palace, Bangkok
The
Grand Palace complex is one of the top must see places in
Bangkok. The complex was began to build in 1782 by the order
of King Rama I when the capital city was moved from Thonburi
to another side of Chao Phraya River, Bangkok. Grand Palace
sattled on 218,400 sq. meters of land and the layout of
the complex is similar to palace in Ayutthaya, which build
next to Chao Phraya river and has Wat Para Kaeo, (The Temple
of the Emerald Buddha), on the east side within the complex.
The Emerald Buddha isn’t actually made of emeralds, but
rather jade. Wat Para Kaeo is the most important temple
in Thailand. If you manage to visit just one temple, visit
this one. Around the temple of emerald buddha, there are
wall paint, telling the story of Ramayana. From 18th century
to mid 20th century, the palace was served as an official
royal residence and office. In the present time, The Grand
Palace is only used for ceremonial purposes.
To
visit the compound , visitors must be properly dressed,
Men must wear ankle lenght trousers, shirts with sleeves
and proper shoes, no sandles or flip-flops. For women, similar
to the men but long length skirt can be worn as an alternative
of ankle lenght trousers . The see-through cloth wearers
are not be permitted to enter the complex. At the front
gate there is a counter that provide proper clothes for
visitors to borrow, however visitors have to leave passport
for security. Prepare properly dressed is recommended or
waste your time in the long borrowing queue.
Open hours : 8:30 am - 3:30 pm, unless
its being used for a state function.
Admission Fee : 250 Baht.
The fee includes admission to Wat Phra
Kaeo, The Royal Thai Decorations and Coins Pavilion inside
the complex and to Vimanmek
Teak Mansion on Ratchawithi Road. (Tickets to Vimanmek
Mansion can be used within 7 days after purchase)
