Wat Saket - Golden Mount, Bangkok
Golden
Mount is a part of Wat Saket Temple and also known as Phukao
Thong. Golden Mount is located on the only hill in Bangkok
which is an artificial hill just outside the city walls.
The temple, Wat Saket, was built during the reign of King
Rama I in late 18th century with small chedi. in the reign
of King Rama III, the larger chedi is built to replace the
small one. However, it collapsed before the construction
was completed due to the softness of the soil under it,
which made a big hill of rubble. Later in 19, King Rama
V topped the hill with a chedi to keep relics, believed
to be the teeth of Lord Buddha. The concrete walls were
built during the World War II the prevent the artificial
hill from eroding.
Going to the top of the hill by climb
the 318 steps stairway give visitors magnificent panoramic
views across Rattanakosin Island.
